Mor Diouf Goal: Supersport United Defender Scores Distance Screamer In South African Premier League (VIDEO)

Mor Diouf may never hold a job with the telephone company, but the Supersport United defender is clearly a long-distance operator.

diof scores screamer goal

In the waning minutes of a scoreless match against Mamelodi Sundowns in the South African Premier League on Sunday, Diouf scored a stunning game-winning goal from his own defensive half of the field. Taking possession deep in his own half in the 88th minute, the Senegalese defender dribbled toward the halfway line but noticed the opposing goalkeeper out of position. He let loose a long-distance 70-yard effort that found the back of the net and gave his team the 1-0 win.

“It’s something that wins games as tight as this, SuperSport United manager Gavin Hunt said, via The Daily Mail. “Once he hit it, I knew it was a goal because I saw where the goalkeeper was and he hit it sweetly.”

Goophone i5S KIRFs the iPhone 5S early, gives the iPhone 4S a run for its money (video)

goophone-i5s-kirfs-the-iphone-5s-early

Ah, Goophone. The company that made its name keepin’ it real fake with eerily similar clones of other companies’ devices, sometimes before the originals have even launched. It’s clearly not dropping that tradition anytime soon, as it just previewed the i5S, an attempt to preempt the supposed iPhone 5S before even the rumor mill has produced anything tangible. As you’d almost expect, it’s really a not-very-subtle imitation of the current iPhone 5 body and software that does its best to mask the use of Android (this time Jelly Bean) rather than iOS. Don’t think that Goophone has learned any more about shadowing Apple on the technology front, however. The i5S is running hardware that would sometimes be trounced by a 2011-era iPhone 4S, including a dual-core 1GHz MediaTek processor, 512MB of RAM, an 854 x 480 screen and a 5-megapixel rear camera. The firm is mostly banking on absurdly low pricing to make up for the sleight-of-hand — at its $ 150 launch price, the i5S costs a fraction of the real iPhone 5′s price while undercutting the older yet somehow more sophisticated Goophone i5. Catch a video demo of the uncanny facsimile after the break.

Lego Bionicles drafted into Arduino-driven band with synthesizers and more (video)

Lego Bionicles drafted into Arduino-driven band with synthesizers and more (video)

Italian sound designer and producer Guiseppe Acito wanted to kick off his newly established blog with some fanfare. Naturally, that meant constructing a band from Lego Bionicle toys driven by an Arduino Uno and controlled by an iPad MIDI sequencer app called Nord Beat. Dubbed the Toa Mata Band, the musical group makes its tunes by beating on assorted drum pads, percussion instruments, synthesizers and even a Nintendo DS. Acito has published the ensemble’s very first music video, and it seems like there are more to come as it carries an “episode one” label. Hit the jump for the footage — which really starts cookin’ around the 1:15 mark — or hit the third source link for glamour shots of Toa Mata members and the whole setup.

Justin Timberlake Joins The Five-Timers Club During ‘SNL’ Monologue (VIDEO)

Justin Timberlake joined the most exclusive club in New York when he hosted “Saturday Night Live” this week, the Five-Timers Club.

Entering the ranks of Paul Simon, Steve Martin, Tom Hanks and many more, Timberlake was welcomed into the lounge where some of the most beloved hosts of the show seem to just hang out and make current cast members fight for their amusement.

The monologue turned into a who’s-who of SNLs past, featuring Simon, Martin, Dan Aykroyd (who was relegated to tending bar since he’s only hosted the show once), Chevy Chase, Martin Short, Alec Baldwin, Hanks, and Candice Bergen.

Twine Cloud Shield puts Arduino gadgets online in seconds (video)

twine-cloud-shield-puts-arduino-gadgets-online-in-seconds

If you’re hip-deep in Arduino projects, you’re likely aware of shields: graft-on boards that add functionality, most often getting the Arduino in touch with the rest of the world. Many of these require more than a little coding skill to get the ball rolling, even in light of the Netduino, which has led Supermechanical to unveil its new Twine Cloud Shield. The board links the Arduino to a Twine WiFi sensor and gives the Arduino every internet feature the Twine can offer through just three lines of code. There’s even a pair of touchpads on the shield to trigger actions through capacitive touch. Do be prepared to pony up for that ease of use when it costs $ 35 for the Cloud Shield alone, and $ 150 to bundle one with the Twine. Still, the outlay may be justified if you’re more interested in quickly finishing a fun experiment than frittering your time away on the basics.

Hands-on with Fujitsu’s waterproof, dustproof Stylistic M702 tablet (video)

SONY DSC

Somehow we missed this at Mobile World Congress last week. We were so busy playing with Fujitsu’s GPS cane and 5-inch F-02E phone that we didn’t even notice the company introduce a waterproof, dustproof Android tablet. As you can see in that shot above, the Stylistic M702 is more than just water-resistant: it meets the standards for IPX5, 7 and 8, which is to say it can withstand immersion in one meter of water for up to 30 minutes. (That, and the occasional jet stream.) A close inspection of the tablet will show that all the ports are sealed with rubber-coated doors, which should keep out liquid as well as dust particles.

Other than that, this more or less has all the specs you’d expect on a high-end Android tablet, including a 1.7GHz quad-core Tegra 3 processor, a 10.1-inch, 1,920 x 1,200, IPS display, 2GB of RAM, NFC, Bluetooth 4.0, MHL, dual 8MP / 1.2MP cameras and LTE connectivity. The built-in storage tops out at 32 gigs, but fortunately there’s a microSD slot to give you more leeway. Out of the box it will run Android 4.0, but an upgrade to Jelly Bean is coming. Interestingly, there’s also a small door housing an antenna, but that’ll only be offered on the Japanese model; the European config we handled here at CeBIT had just a blank slot. Most impressive of all, potentially, is the claimed battery life: the 10,000mAh cell is rated for 15 hours of runtime, which would be a coup indeed. And at 590g (1.3 pounds) the tablet isn’t even that heavy, considering the gigantic battery squeezed inside. It’s available now in Europe, Africa, India and the Middle East for €999, which is expensive, sure, but perhaps it’s a price corporate customers can swallow anyway.

Volvo revamps its pedestrian detection system to automatically break for cyclists (video)

d7313_the_volvo

Cars that automatically stop when a pedestrian is in the way have been in Volvo’s fleet for a while now, but the automaker has just unveiled an update to its existing tech that’ll stomp on the brakes when cyclists are too close for comfort. Announced at this year’s Geneva Motor Show, the revamped system detects how close objects are with a grille-mounted radar and then uses a high-def camera within an auto’s rear-view mirror to discern whether it’s barreling down on a pedestrian or a biker. When bicyclists swerve in front of an automobile heading in the same direction, the setup immediately alerts the driver and applies full brake power — a world’s first Volvo says. According to the Swedish manufacturer, all vehicles outfitted with the pedestrian detection will have the cyclist spotting technology baked in, and it’ll show up in mid-May within the new Volvo V40, S60, V60, XC60, V70, XC70 and S80. Head past the break for a video of the feature in action.

MSI’s mid-range S30 laptop is coming to Europe for 699 euro, we go hands-on (video)

fe492_the_dsc05487

When we first heard MSI was showing off a device at CeBIT called the S30, we assumed it was the successor to the S20, the company’s first Windows 8 Ultrabook. Alas, though, it’s not quite an Ultrabook, and it’s certainly not as well-specced a system as the S20. What we have instead is a 13-inch thin-and-light, one that’s headed to Europe for €699 and up. To start with a quick rundown of the specs, it comes either a Core i3 or i5 processor, along with 4GB of RAM and a variety of storage options, with the best one being a 500GB / 64GB SSD combo.

Oddly, that 1,366 x 768 display doesn’t support touch — a surprise given the price, and given that other machines in its class do include that feature. At least the touchpad seems to do a capable job of handling all the various Windows 8 gestures. Finishing up our tour, that 23mm-thick chassis (a bit too thick by Ultrabook standards) is wide enough to accomodate an Ethernet jack, along with HDMI-out and a VGA socket. Only one USB 3.0 port (plus one 2.0 connection) seems a bit stingy, though. In any case, enjoy our hands-on video, and maybe even stay tuned for a closer look at that S20 Slider.
