Android Authority On Air – Episode 30 – Chameleon Round 2

Android Authority On Air Hosts: Scott Anderson & Derek Ross

This week we’re back with your favorite Kickstarter Android Launcher, Chameleon. As you may recall, this wasn’t our first go with the HTML5 based widget launcher, we had an exclusive interview with Chameleon when it all began back in early August. This week they dropped version 1.0 to the Play Store and we went live with them again to bring you all the goodies such as widget API’s, upcoming widgets and performance increases. Besides Chameleon, other popular apps had some hefty updates and overhauls this week. Google Maps added a few features, Facebook began copying Google+ features again, and Twitter had some impressive updates.

Android as a whole hit some nice milestones this past week such as capturing 68% of the 2012 Q3 market share. We also saw the Google Play Store add over 600 titles. These include Family Guy, Modern Family, Prometheus and more. Matias Duarte, the man behind the ICS and JB gorgeous UI let the world know he’s only about a third of the way done with Android’s UI.

Don’t you just love the fall? It’s gadget heaven. We had tons of device rumors, news, and announcements this week. From the LG Optimus G, Oppo Finder 5, to the Padfone 2 and even some Nexus rumors. Some old devices received much needed OTA updates this week and the HTC One X might be getting Jelly Bean sometime in October.

For rootin’ and ramen noodles (watch the show) the Android Open Kang Project dropped build #2 on the world and man loves them some customization. CyanogenMod 10 keeps on truckin’ adding support for more devices this week. There’s also a new universal root tool making the rounds and so far it roots a hefty amount of devices. Lastly, if you decided to pick up a Kindle Fire HD, the bootloader is still locked but thanks to an unpatched bug (thanks Amazon!) you can easily root your new Fire.

Android Authority On Air – Episode 29 – iPhone5 Announced – Apple still playing catch up

Android Authority On Air Hosts: Scott Anderson & Derek Ross

This week on Android Authority On Air we came to the realization that following the recent Apple iPhone 5 announcement, this very well could be our last Android based show. The pre-orders are in, we’re moving to iOS! …And then we woke up from that nightmare and realized it was a horrible, horrible lie. On a serious note, we did discussed the latest smartphone from Apple. It’s truly sad to see how far the device has fallen behind. Sorry Sprint and Verizon users, you won’t be able to talk and use data at the same time, something that Android phones on those networks can do with ease. There’s no NFC, the camera is basically the same, the screen is basically the same, now with more stretch! That’s about it.

Since this is still an Android show, we did talk about a few Android related items this week such as the latest milestone from Android, 500 million globally activated devices. Wow! We hit up some Google Wallet updates. Prepaid cards are going away as they are no longer needed. If you’re on Verizon Wireless and using Google Wallet, you can’t use sneaky tricks to install the application any longer from the Play Store. The horror! Now, you’ll have to manually install the application as with any unsupported application. Nothing new here folks. Move along. Turntable.FM had some updates, now with more Android-ness. eBay decided to join the ranks of Holo UI and our favorite Kickstarter launcher, Chameleon, had a major update this past week. Besides apps, we saw a handful of devices be announced, teased, or launch this week. We’re excited over LG’s Optimus G. Man, those specs look pretty nice. Over on the rootin’ and ROMin’ front, CM10 graced the world with their first ever monthly update and the XOOM LTE and WiFi editions are now getting official nightly builds. Carriers continue to LTE all the things. Sprint, Verizon and AT&T all announced major coverage expansions this past week. All this and more happened on the greatest Android Hangout Show this week, check us out below.

The Give Away

We’re giving away a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 (International) here in the near future. If you’re interested and want another chance to win, during the show we give away a super secret entry code. Once you get the code, just head on over to the contest page and enter your code into the Rafflecopter.

Android Authority On Air – Episode 28 – Motorola DROID RAZR HD and Kindle Fire HD

Android Authority On Air Hosts: Scott Anderson & Derek Ross

If you happened to catch our attempted LIVE show last night, you’re aware that we had all sorts of technical difficulties.  Our Hangout On Air on Google+ was lagged. We were getting disconnected, some people even thought all of our fan girls were using up all of our bandwidth. After a few failed attempts we decided to reschedule the show, a day later.

Fast forward to today, we went live, without issue. This week we focused on Motorola and Amazon’s recent announcements. Motorola announced the Droid RAZR HD, Droid RAZR MAXX HD, and the Droid RAZR M. The latest round of RAZR’s are pretty amazing, if we do happen to say so ourselves. Motorola is also giving you a $100 credit to buy a new phone if your 2011 Motorola phone won’t be getting Jelly Bean. Besides phones, this week we also saw Amazon drop 3 new Kindle Fire tablets onto the world. We saw an upgrade to the original Kindle Fire, a new Kindle Fire HD 7 inch, a new Kindle Fire HD 8.9 inch and even one with LTE.

Sprint decided to finally update their Nexus devices. The Samsung Galaxy Nexus and Nexus S 4G have begun receiving Android Jelly Bean 4.1.1 and a few other devices finally got their Android 4.0 ICS updates. uTorrent arrived on Android and last but not least HTC plans to sue Apple with their LTE patents.

The Give Away

We’re giving away a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 (International) here in the near future. If you’re interested and want another chance to win, during the show we give away a super secret entry code. Once you get the code, just head on over to the contest page and enter your code into the Rafflecopter.

Android Authority On Air – Episode 27 – IFA 2012 Recap

Android Authority On Air Hosts: Scott Anderson & Derek Ross

If you don’t know what IFA 2012 is, that’s ok. All you need to know is that it’s similar to CES…but in Berlin. It’s an extremely large electronics show. And, like any electronics show in this day and age, it’s littered with tons of mobile devices and gadgets. Of course we had to be there, check out our hands on devices reviews  from IFA 2012. Naturally, this week on the show we talked about a few popular ones such as the Samsung Galaxy Note II, the Samsung Galaxy Camera, the Archos GamePad (it runs Android) and a few others.

This week had a ton of major app updates. We saw an extremely nice update to the Google Play Store with personalized recommendations. That’s right, you’ll now get recommendations from your friends as well as similar users and items popular in your area. Google also updated Google Now, the information automation service that comes with Jelly Bean. Google Now users will receive public service announcements, movie showtimes and you can now manually add your favorite sports teams (as long as your favorite team is not a college team). HBO Go now supports Jelly Bean and PayPal got a major UI overhaul. If you want to send text messages from your Android tablet, have we got an app for you! And last, but not least, the much anticipated 3D Android game that was demoed at Google IO 2012, Horn, finally launched this past week. And man, does it rock!

We ran around the rumor mill a few times this week with an upcoming device from Motorola. All we know thus far is that they’re bringing it to the edge. Does that mean a device with zero bezel? Or is that the name of the upcoming #motoedge device, the Motorola Edge? I guess we’ll find out on September 18th. We didn’t stop the rumor mill there though. We hammered away at the 3G variant of the Nexus 7. Will this device launch in 6 weeks? Will it ship for just a few bucks more than the WiFi only Nexus 7? Will it come with HSPA+ only? Your guess is as good as ours. Finally, the Kindle Fire 2. Rumor has it that Amazon will launch an ad-supported version of the Kindle Fire, making it the cheapest 7″ tablet to date.

Samsung plans to unleash the legal beast against Apple if they launch an LTE equipped iPhone 5 in a few days. Sammy owns roughly 10% of all LTE patents. Apple has repeatedly argued that these Samsung patents should be made industry standards due to their broad, sweeping nature…where have we heard that before. Hey kettle, how ya doin? And finally, there’s a rumor going around that Tim Cook and Larry Page are going to meet to discuss patents. Only time shall tell.

The Give Away

We’re giving away a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 (International) here in the near future. If you’re interested and want another chance to win, during the show we give away a super secret entry code. Once you get the code, just head on over to the contest page and enter your code into the Rafflecopter.

Android Authority On Air – Episode 26 – Samsung vs Apple Verdict and Vizio CoStar Review

Android Authority On Air Hosts: Scott Anderson & Derek Ross

During this weeks show, we were joined by special guest Chris Hollis of Google TV Friends to help us with our Vizio Co-Star and Google TV review. As you may know, this week the $99 Google TV set top box started to arrive for those that pre-ordered. We go over initial impresses ions, setup and configuration, software/UI, and popular, must have Google TV apps.

It’s that time of year again. Right before the fall season when we start to see rumors pop up all over the place regarding the next Nexus phone from Google. This time around, the rumor mill is running full force with leaks pointing towards at least three Nexus phones. The Sony Xperia Nexus, the LG Optimus Nexus and the Samsung Galaxy Nexus II are rumored thus far. Interest sparked? Yes.

Just a few hours before the show the verdict dropped for the Apple vs Samsung trial. As this is an extremely important trial for the largest Android smartphone manufacturer, we figured we better talk about it. I think most of us agree, Samsung was wronged, the jury was blind, and we can’t wait for the appeal.

Besides the big stories this week, T-Mobile has axed their version of the Galaxy Note after two weeks. The HTC Thunderbolt got a leaked ICS ROM and the HTC Incredible 2 got one as also. The Samsung Galaxy S3 leaked all over the place this past week, for both the international version and the T-Mobile version. And Facebook goes dogfooding with Android.

The Give Away

We’re giving away a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 (International) here in the near future. If you’re interested and want another chance to win, during the show we give away a super secret entry code. Once you get the code, just head on over to the contest page and enter your code into the Rafflecopter.

Android Authority On Air – Episode 23 – Interview with Chameleon Launcher Developer

Android Authority On Air Hosts: Scott Anderson & Derek Ross

This week, we dig into Android’s latest launcher, Chameleon, along with this week’s special guest Phill, from their development team.  Screen real estate, widgets, and home screens based on a context system make Chameleon extremely powerful. Chameleon, now in private beta, will soon be launching an SDK system to allow developers from all walks of life to create additional widgets.  Don’t worry Kickstarter backers, you’ll be getting your invites in the next few days. Chameleon has a lot of potential and they keep adding functionality. Keep an eye on this application, it’s going to get better.

Google’s Wallet grows up, allows any major credit card to be added. Google adds additional security features which make Wallet extremely enticing. The Nexus Q goes free to those that pre-ordered, the rest of us will have to wait while Google figures out exactly what they want to do with the Q. They plan on adding more functionality, which is great news. Next up, Verizon gets a slap on the wrist resulting in tethering changes. This is a good thing. Users can now download tethering apps directly from the Google Play store and bypass the $20/month fee. Thanks FCC. Sadly, a bunch of old Snapdragon phones won’t be getting CM9 or CM10. They’ll have to settle for Cm7.2 or non-CM ICS/JB ports in the future.

Android Authority On Air – Episode 22 – Google Fiber and Other News

Android Authority On Air Hosts: Scott Anderson & Derek Ross

Google Fiber launched this week in Kansas City bringing fiber Internet and TV to area residents. If you’re a Kansas City resident, feel free to rub it in to the rest of the world that you have have 1gbps Internet. $120 / month gets you the full package and all the goods, $70/month doesn’t get you TV, but gets you Internet and lastly, if you’re cheap, you can get Internet for free after paying $300 to get your fiber laid.

Don’t want to move to Kansas City to get Google Fiber TV? That’s OK. You can try the generation 2 Google TV from Vizio. That is, if you can find their Co-Star device. That thing is HOT. It sold out of the initial stock in 12 hours. And no wonder it’s hot, it comes with OnLive gaming and costs only $99. Not bad.

The Xoom WiFi officially got Jelly Bean this week. If you don’t have a Google reference device, the CyanogenMod team has you covered. This past week we saw well over a dozen devices get official CM10 previews.

This week the Google / Asus Nexus 7 officially launched. This tablet is amazing and extremely popular. Our guests and hosts discussed the most popular features of the Nexus 7 including price, content, form factor, size and weight and general usability. Yes, some people are complaining about dead pixels or screen lifting issues. Is this really a big deal? Don’t many, many tablets have launch issues including the latest iPad? Yes. When you’re mass producing these units you’re bound to have a few that aren’t perfect. Send’em back and get a replacement.

Besides the Nexus7 shipping with Jelly Bean, we were teased this week with CM10 on many, many different devices. We’ve seen previews for Optimus 4X, HTC One S, Xoom, Nexus 7, all variants of the SGS3 minus Verizon, HTC Sensation, SGS1, SGS2 Skyrocket, Epic Touch, Galaxy Tab 10.1, Toro, and Maguro.

CM9 reaches release candidate 2 and adds support for a handful of Samsung devices. Do you need a phone with 64GB of storage? Samsung thinks you do. AT&T announces their new shared data plans and we compare them to Verizon’s Share Everything plans and more this week on Android Authority On Air.

Android Authority On Air Hosts: Scott Anderson & Derek Ross

Here are some big topics we discuss in Episode 20

The Big Android BBQ is one of the largest pure Android technology conferences for Android developers and enthusiasts around. Being the Android social event of the year, the Big Android BBQ is moving this year into the state-of-the-art Hurst Convention Center in the Dallas Fort Worth area. Earlier this week, tickets went on sale for the October 19-21st event. On the show we’ll be joined by Aaron Kasten of the Big Android BBQ event team to go over all things BBQ and all things Android.

This week we received big Ice Cream Sandwich news followed by some big Jelly Bean news. Users of the Samsung Galaxy S2 Skyrocket, Galaxy S2 Epic 4G Touch, and the Galaxy Note were finally updated to Ice Cream Sandwich. Samsung tossed around some Ice Cream lovin to their Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus as well. Following ICS news, Jelly Bean was released to the world via the Android Open Source Project with version 4.1.1. Besides blessing the dev community, Google began rolling out Jelly Bean 4.1.1 to the HSPA+ Galaxy Nexus. Other Nexus devices are up next, so keep your fingers crossed.

Last but not least, the Nexus 7 started shipping. We’ve even seeing a few lucky people pick them up at brick and mortar retail stores. So, what’s this about magnets and the Nexus 7? Earlier this week it was discovered that the Nexus 7 has a neat little hidden feature. We’ll cover all these stories and more later tonight.

Android Authority On Air – Episode 19 – To root or not to root

Android Authority On Air Hosts: Scott Anderson & Derek Ross

This week on Android Authority On Air we’ll try not to rage or voice our opinions too much over this weeks Patent Wars segment. The Galaxy Nexus has been banned in the US. You can’t even buy it from the Google Play Store. And that Android fans, has us fuming. We’ll try not to talk about #boycottapple too much as we have many other issues to discuss. From Amazon phone rumors, to CM10, to the Nexus 7 and Jelly Bean information, all is not doom and gloom this week.

Rising out of the sadness of the Galaxy Nexus being banned raised some pretty tough questions this week for many Android fans. Now that Jelly Bean is available through for the Galaxy Nexus for root users and those who attended Google I/O12, should you root it. Many users this week new to rooting their devices decided that enough was enough and took matters into their own hands for the very first time. Others were tempted by the buttery goodness of Jelly Bean, but held their ground, staying stock.

Tune in tonight at 9:30pm ET and watch us LIVE on our Google+ Page!

This weeks featured discussion: Should you root your phone? (Or tablet for that matter). Why do people do it? What are the benefits of doing it? And, most important to some, are there any cons? If you’re sitting on the fence with this one, be sure to join in on the live discussion and get your questions answered.
